The following information is for anyone wishing to learn more about Botox, particularly those who are considering whether to have an injection with Botox. Some uses of botulinum toxin are unlicensed in the UK, but all uses described below are accepted medical practice in the United States, Europe and elsewhere.
Botox injections should only be given by a Medical Practitioner who has received appropriate training.
Underarm Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
It's normal for humans to sweat !! We lose at least half a litre of fluid each day from water in our breath and sweat, it's one of the ways in which we control body temperature and water content. It's also normal to sweat more in stressful or scary situations and there must be few if any people who have never experienced that tacky feeling !!
Excess sweating can be generalised or localised e.g. armpits, hands and face and can be so severe that it's recognised medically being given the name hyperhidrosis.
Some people experience excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis) causing much anxiety about odour and staining of clothing. Many find themselves in a vicious circle whereby anxiety about the sweating almost guarantees that it will occur in many everyday situations. Medication is often ineffective, but Botox blocks the nerves to sweat glands, and is very effective in reducing sweating and odour for many months. Before using Botox for this purpose one needs to ensure that medical causes of sweating have been excluded. eg. Over-active thyroid or other hormonal disorders.
Cold sweaty hands can cause embarrasment for the sufferer who will often avoid handshakes etc. This can be succesfully treated by Botox injections.
How is Botox given?
By injecting the sweat gland sites. It is more easily administered if the armpits are shaved approximately one week prior to injection.
Do the injections hurt?
Because the needles are so fine and the quantity of Botox so small, the discomfort is minimal. We will use a local anaesthetic cream if patients do find the injections uncomfortable. The hands are very sensitive and injection here can be uncomfortable - although it is over quite quickly !!
How long will it last ?
This varies from person to person, but can last up to 9 months.
Are there any side- effects?
Botox is not harmful. There may be some localised bruising following the injections or slight swelling, but this will quickly wear off. Our medical staff will discuss the use of Botox in detail before any treatment is given.
How will I feel afterwards?
Self-assured and confident without the embarrassment often experienced in social situations.
